End of Year Letter: 2022 —> 2023

For Art Papers, 2022 has been about expanding our team, forging new partnerships, and planting the seeds of exciting collaborations, which will carry us into what we plan to make a fruitful and innovative 2023. 

• In 2022, we grew our core team to 4 full time staff members by welcoming Jennifer Williams to the NEA–funded two-year position of Program + Outreach Coordinator. And Noah Reyes joined us as Circulation + Editorial Coordinator. 
• We launched the inaugural Mildred Thompson Art Writing & Editorial Fellowship in partnership with the Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane University and welcomed Sherae Rimpsey to that role. 
• And we added 2 members to our cohort of Contributing Editors: Atlanta-based art critic and writer Cinqué Hicks; and LA-based writer, artist, and researcher Mashinka Firunts Hakopian. They join our existing, international group of Contributing Editors that includes writers, curators, educators, and artists who are actively impacting the industry, shaping the discourses of contemporary art, and informing the work of ART PAPERS. 
• We published 4 print issues of ART PAPERS totaling 42 original texts in print and commissioned another 15 online exclusives, including essays, interviews, and reviews bringing our total commissions in 2022 to 57. 
• We featured a broad range of artists and cultural producers such as Ge Yulu, Vitshois Mwilambwe Bondo, Khaled Mala, Malcolm Peacock, Liv Bugge, Jemma Desai, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Itziar Barrio, Pearl Cleage, Jonas Staal, Levani, Baseera Khan, Hito Steyerl, Heba Y. Amin, Otolith Group, Curtis Patterson, Laurie Anderson, Jeremy Bolen, Charmaine Minniefield, Carlos Motta, TJ Shin, Roberto Visani, Elvia Wilk, Breyer P-Orridge, Simone Leigh, and Korakrit Arunanondchai, among many others.
• We produced 4 Artist Projects with Guadalupe Maravilla and Rosanna Raymond, plus Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste and The Afield who also joined us for 2 ART PAPERS LIVE performances.
• We welcomed 2 new members to the ART PAPERS Board of Directors – Sherri Daye Scott with WABE and Mark Zhang with TriBridge Residential.
• Eight interns joined us from Agnes Scott College, Maryland Institute College of Art, Yale University, University of Georgia, and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
• We continued our commitment to publish work by artists who write. About 60% of our contributing writers are working artists.
• We published reviews of books, films, television programs, and exhibitions from around the world including Europe, Asia, Central America, and cities big and small around the United States. And as always, we shone our spotlight the brightest on our hometown, with more reviews of Atlanta-based artists and exhibitions than any other location. 
• With the success of our Contributor Conversations—launched in 2020 in response to the pandemic—we have continued to expand our geographic reach. In 2022, our 6 conversations on Instagram Live have been viewed almost 2,200 times.

Looking ahead:

• We are excited to dive into our 2023 themes: Artificial Intelligence (with co-editor Mashinka Firunts Hakopian), Refusal/Renewal, Children, and a very special fall issue with a major institutional collaborator and guest editor (to be announced in Spring 2023).
• ART PAPERS LIVE will continue to bring renowned artists to Atlanta audiences starting in the spring with Stephanie Dinkins in conjunction with our AI issue.
• We will launch an art writing workshop in New Orleans in the fall, designed and helmed by Mildred Thompson Editorial Fellow Sherae Rimpsey, in partnership with Newcomb Art Museum and Tulane University. This program will seek to support and expand the art writing ecosystem in the Gulf South.
• We’re looking forward to producing another exhibition in fall 2023 which will bring together local and non-local artists to expand upon our editorial theme of Refusal/Renewal.
