Adrian Piper's "The Joy of Marginality" (1988), appeared in ART PAPERS in 1990. The article speaks directly to—and to some degree, inspired—the theme of our March/April 2014 issue, which is broadly devoted to the "margins" of cultural geography and identity, and to the printed page itself. Reproduced here in PDF form, "The Joy of Marginality" kicks off what we hope to be a new tradition of regularly making relevant materials from our archive available to our online readership.

Piper has most recently addressed the issues of marginality and marginalization in relation to her philosophical work, in the new Preface to the Second Edition of her two-volume Rationality of the Self, which is available here.
